How A Clogged Storm Drain Affects Your Property

August 11, 2023

What a clogged storm drain looks like in Vancouver WA and Portland OR

Storm drainage systems are specifically designed to redirect water during heavy rain. But, what happens when one becomes clogged and can no longer do its job? Unfortunately, a clogged storm drain can cause major damage to your home and property. Some problems a blockage can cause include:

Flooding in your home or property. If your storm drain is clogged, excess water has nowhere to go. So, the water may remain stagnant on your property, or it may seep into your home and pool in your basement.
Damage to your roof. If the pipes in your storm drainage system become blocked, then water may begin to collect on your roof. Standing water can cause your roof to warp, leading to leaking or other problems. As excess water pours down the sides of your home, it can also lead to chipped paint and distorted siding.
Structural damage to your home. Standing water can weaken your home’s structural integrity, which can pose a major safety risk. Large amounts of water place significant stress on your home’s foundation, and the humidity after flooding can cause additional damage.

How to Tell If Your Storm Drain Needs Attention
A clogged storm drain can be a big problem, leading to safety hazards and large repair costs. Identifying a blockage early can help you keep your property safe from flooding. Here are some warning signs that your storm drain needs attention:

Water is draining slowly. If water is not draining properly, you are likely experiencing a blockage somewhere in your storm drainage system. Storm drains can become clogged by all sorts of debris, such as leaves or dirt. Identifying and clearing out a blockage can prevent flooding or damage.
It’s freezing outside. In cold weather, ice can form over your pipes or drains. When freezing temperatures set it, it may be a good idea to go check on your storm drain to break away any ice that could be accumulating over the top.
You’re experiencing flooding. Flooding is a big sign that your storm drain may be blocked. If you can’t identify the source of the blockage, you may want to seek professional help before the flooding can cause too much damage.
